78 Words (2010) Temporary installation. 78 laser-cut acrylic blocks, looped audio 9:34.
78 words explores the artist's experiences with chronic pain associated with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Referring to a commonly used medical assessment, the McGill Pain Questionnaire, which uses 78 descriptive words for types of pain, the installation features each of the words laser cut on acrylic blocks, hanging at various heights in a white space. A looped audio recording of a reading of the definitions of each of the 78 words plays in the space.
This piece refers to the struggle to describe and articulate chronic pain, especially in the midst of it. The cloudy, difficult to decipher words float around the viewer's head, simulating brain fog.
